Color, Comics, and Taking a Moment to Dream

On shades of gray

“If life is art,” asked fox, “why wouldn’t everyone want to live in color?”

Butterfly took a deep breath, knowing this answer would be harder than it seemed.

Mobile: Recently, I had the fun opportunity to collaborate with Brian Basset of Red and Rover on a mobile ++ comic strip. It’s out today in 300+ Go Comics newspapers, including our very own The Oregonian. Brian was kind of enough to sketch this fun thank you (below) for me.

Thoughts while playing
What’s your favorite comic strip of all time? Why?

As a kid, Wizard of Id (by @Mason Mastroianni), Hagar the Horrible, and Mother Goose and Grimm topped my list.

Well, that’s when I was able to wrestle the daily comics away from my older brothers and sisters.

For me, those daily newspaper comics offered a chance to escape…

- Into a few inches of rectangled ink.

- Where time, space, and infinite possibility sat stacked, side by side, top to bottom.

- Two columns of adventure + mayhem + silliness.

Each morning delivered this invitation to dip into faraway little worlds, without effort, without fear.

An opportunity to circle up with wizards and vikings, dragons and fractured fairy tales.

And dream.
And imagine.
And not answer questions about the day ahead (#neverbeenafan).

And then there was Sunday.

Once a week, these gray worlds burst into color. And laughter.

Gray worlds bursting into color and laughter. How amazing would that be?

In our oft black-and-white world, I wish you a moment today where a sweet splash of color washes over your thoughts, your heart; lightening, releasing, treating, soothing you if even for just a passing few.
