Apps, Values, and Spring Cleaning Decisions

On decisions

“But what if I make the wrong one,” asked bird, “won’t I regret it?”

“You’ll always regret the decision you didn’t make,” replied bear, “more than the one you did.”

I have two folders on my phone.

One is labeled “Stuff.”

The other is titled “Useful Stuff.”

In Useful Stuff, I have apps like:

Training Peaks

Google Maps

Insight Timer

Firefox

Plum Village App

Oura

Strava

Ride with GPS

I also have everyday tools like calculator, weather, and calendar.

In Stuff, I have just that: random apps that I rarely use.

The Stuff folder is big.

The Useful Stuff folder is small.

The apps in Useful Stuff align with that which I value: health and wellness, a sense of direction, mindfulness, curiosity, adventure.

The things in Stuff don’t really align to anything. They just take up space. A lot of it.

And that begs the question: how much Stuff in your life just takes up space?

How much Stuff in your life takes up time and energy?

How much Stuff in your life is actually aligned to – and in service of – that which you value?

I assess the things in Useful Stuff every so often, making – sometimes tough – decisions as to what stays and what goes.

How often, however, do we do this in our own lives? How often do we assess what is and is not serving us and make editing decisions accordingly?

With spring cleaning on the horizon, perhaps now might be a good time for such an assessment – dusting off those values and making sure we’re aligning what we value with the stuff that surrounds us, inside and out?

What’s one value you will decide to prioritize as we move further into this new year?
